Image and video decision

Screenrat

A competent developer can reproduce ScreenRat's core (local screen capture, webcam overlay, local storage, one‑time unlock) using available open-source projects and macOS APIs; keeping the paid app is worth it only for the packaged UX, polish, and support.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Screenrat alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Record screen frames locally, optionally overlay webcam, encode to a video file, and save to the user's disk (one-off pro unlock to enable 4K).

What it still won’t have

  • Polish, QA and platform-specific edge-case handling (e.g. macOS screen-capture permission quirks)
  • Notarized app packaging and App Store distribution work
  • Priority customer support and frictionless installer experience
  • Professionally tuned 4K encoding presets and optimization for diverse hardware

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a native macOS screen recorder in Swift using AVFoundation/AVCapture (or CGDisplayStream for high performance). Implement: 1) full-screen and selectable-area capture, 2) audio capture and sync, 3) webcam face-cam overlay compositing, 4) encoding/muxing to MP4/MOV with H.264 and HEVC presets including a 4K setting behind an unlock flag, 5) a minimal Cocoa UI for recording controls, file browser, and one-time license unlock, 6) signed DMG packaging and basic notarization scripts. Out of scope: cloud upload, multi-user sync, subscription billing, and a web dashboard. Include error handling for permission denial, disk-full and encoder failures, unit tests for encoder and file-write components, and end-to-end integration tests for start/stop flows.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 5 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score64

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
