Image and video decision
BlitzRecorder
Because the project is AGPL and the vendor links its GitHub repo, a technical user can build and run the official apps themselves rather than pay; stand up the repository builds and use the developer-signed apps instead of purchasing.

Not priced
No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All BlitzRecorder alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Pair iPhone with Mac over local network; compose scenes and layouts; start/stop recordings that save camera, screen, and audio files; transfer finished camera file from iPhone to Mac automatically; export composed video (1080p/4K/60fps).
What it still won’t have
- Official signed/notarized releases and one-click installers from the vendor
- Commercial support and the vendor's 30-day money-back guarantee
- Vendor-provided automatic license/checkout flow (Stripe-based) and receipt handling
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build and run the official BlitzRecorder apps from source: use Xcode 15+ to compile the macOS desktop app (macOS 15 target) and the iOS camera companion (iOS 18+). Package the macOS binary as a signed developer-build .app and install the iOS app on a test device via a development provisioning profile. Implement and verify local-network pairing and automatic camera-file transfer, verify scene/layout composition and export presets (1080p, 4K, 60fps), and provide clear install and permissions steps for end users. Out of scope: building a commercial installer marketplace checkout, automated notarization pipeline, or cloud upload features. Include error handling for permission denials, failed transfers, and failed exports, and add unit/integration tests for build, pairing, file transfer, and export flows.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Self-host verdict base92
- 3 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score99
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
