Image and video decision
Veo3 Gen
A technical user can self-host a workable video-generation service using open-source projects (reducing vendor spend), but they cannot reproduce Veo3 Gen's proprietary VEO3 models, managed credit/billing system, and claimed infra-driven price/performance—so self-hosting is viable for a narrow workflow but not a full feature/quality replacement.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Veo3 Gen alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Accept prompt or image → POST to video-generation backend → poll job status → store video in object storage and return playback URL.
What it still won’t have
- Direct access to VEO3 proprietary models and any quality/sync tradeoffs specific to their backend
- Managed credit system, billing, and dispute/refund handling provided by Veo3 Gen
- Dedicated support SLA and curated presets/features tied to the vendor
- Their claimed low per-second pricing achieved by their infrastructure optimizations

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a self-hosted minimal AI video-generation web app using Docker + NVIDIA GPU (or cloud GPU instance), Python (FastAPI) backend, a simple React frontend, Postgres for job metadata, and S3-compatible object storage for videos. In scope: POST /generate wrapper that accepts prompt/image and model options, authenticates users with API keys, enqueues generation jobs to an existing open-source generator (integrate https://github.com/Anil-matcha/Open-Generative-AI or Hugging Face diffusers backends), poll worker status, persist results and credits accounting, provide an endpoint to fetch job status and final video URL, and a frontend to submit jobs and play videos. Out of scope: training new models, replicating proprietary VEO3 model weights, multi-tenant billing provider integration. Include retries/exponential backoff for retryable errors, content-policy error handling paths, unit and integration tests for API endpoints, and Docker Compose deployment manifests for single-node GPU hosting.

- Evidence score67
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
