Image and video decision

VectorEngine

A technical user can build a basic image-to-editable-SVG workflow using existing open-source tracers and editors, but reproducing the vendor’s hosted AI model quality, polish, licensing and paid features (batch/private generation, priority support) is impractical without their proprietary model and product work.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All VectorEngine alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Upload raster or enter prompt → raster-to-vector conversion or AI generation → present editable SVG layers in browser editor → allow export/download of SVG (and optional regeneration).

What it still won’t have

  • The vendor’s trained/hosted AI model and its ongoing improvements
  • Polish around generation consistency, UI/UX and batch-processing features
  • Built-in commercial license, private generation guarantees, and paid support
  • Priority/managed hosting and the vendor-maintained credit system

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal AI-assisted vector generator and tracer using Node.js + Express backend, a PostgreSQL or SQLite for simple user/credits, and a React frontend that embeds an open-source SVG editor. Core features in scope: image upload and prompt entry UI; server-side raster-to-vector conversion using visioncortex/vtracer or an open-source tracing library callable from Node; normalize output into layered, editable SVG with text as editable text elements; in-browser SVG viewer/editor integration (use GodSVG or a lightweight SVG editing component) with ability to edit paths/anchors and export downloadable SVG; simple auth (email+password) and Stripe subscription checkout for a single paid tier; credits tracking and regeneration UI; error handling for failed conversions, input validation, and unit tests for backend conversion endpoints and frontend critical flows. Out of scope: training or hosting proprietary generative ML models, advanced design-system generators, high-volume batch processing, and designer-focused UX polish. Include CI, Docker-based deployment, and end-to-end tests.

  • Evidence score63

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
