Try Tattoo 3D

A minimal, local-first Three.js web app that projects uploaded designs onto 3D body meshes is realistic for one capable developer to build and maintain; the vendor's cloud sync, AI generation, and polish are the main things you'd give up.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. What a replacement has to do

  • Upload an image, position/transform it on a 3D body mesh, render a photorealistic preview, export or save the result.

What it still won’t have

  • Pro product polish (onboarding, analytics, multi-device sync, payment handling)
  • Cloud storage and cross-device sync out of the box
  • Built-in AI tattoo generation and future "photorealistic preview" features listed as coming soon
  • Support, SLAs, and a marketed user community

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-developer web app (React + Three.js) that runs as a static site and lets a user upload a tattoo image, select a body mesh, and interactively place/scale/rotate the tattoo with real-time projected texturing and basic lighting; core features in scope: (1) Three.js viewer with 3 sample body meshes and adjustable skin-tone materials, (2) image upload and projective texture mapping or UV-based decal placement, (3) UI controls for move/scale/rotate/opacity/blend, (4) export current camera view to PNG, (5) optional simple cloud save using one managed backend (Supabase or Firebase) for projects and auth. Out of scope: AI tattoo generation, advanced photorealistic skin aging, mobile native apps, multi-tenant billing. Include error handling, unit/integration tests for upload and export flows, and CI to build/deploy to Netlify or Vercel.

  • Evidence score89

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
