Image and video decision
Swiftship
A single technical person can build and maintain a minimal local App Preview generator (using ffmpeg and existing CLI libraries) cheaper than buying the packaged macOS app; the vendor offers convenience, polish, and licensing which the replacement will not replicate.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Swiftship alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Drop iPhone/iPad screen recordings → trim/reorder/retime clips → add intro/outro and background music → export Apple-compliant preview video
What it still won’t have
- Polished native macOS UI and app-store packaging
- One-year of vendor updates and commercial support
- Built-in licensed music library and curated presets
- License management (per-Mac activation) and refund handling
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a cross-platform desktop tool (Electron + React for UI, Node.js backend) that runs entirely locally and produces Apple App Store Preview videos. In scope: drag-and-drop import of iPhone/iPad screen recordings, clip trimming and simple reorder UI (no timeline), per-clip speed controls, intro/outro overlay with text+logo, background music selection (local upload), and an ffmpeg-based export pipeline that crops/scales/pads and encodes to Apple App Preview specifications (support common iPhone/iPad resolutions and presets). Out of scope: multi-user licensing server, cloud uploads, built-in commercial music library, and App Store submission automation. Require: detailed error handling for unsupported input files, automated tests for the export pipeline (unit tests for transform parameters and integration test that verifies an output file matches expected resolution/codec), and a README with macOS packaging and notarization instructions.

How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score89
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
