Image and video decision
ScreenFlow
A single developer can build a basic screen-record + trim + export app (one-week), but Telestream’s product sits in a broader, enterprise-grade portfolio with scale and brand advantages that are costly to replicate, so rebuilding a narrow workflow is realistic but replacing the full paid product is not.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All ScreenFlow alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Record screen → trim/edit timeline → export video file
What it still won’t have
- Vendor support, warranties, and enterprise SLAs
- Mature, optimized encoders and cross-platform distribution pipelines
- Advanced features from Telestream product family (broadcast monitoring, cloud VOD workflows)
- Brand recognition and ecosystem integrations
- Extensive QA, compatibility testing across codecs and capture hardware
What remains hard
- Brand trust
As a trusted partner, Telestream empowers customers with the technology and support they need to succeed.
- Infrastructure at scale
Telestream’s scalable solutions ensure every play, highlight, and celebration reaches fans in real time across every device, bringing the energy of live sports to audiences everywhere.

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal macOS screen-recording and editing app in Swift using AVFoundation/ScreenCaptureKit, a lightweight SQLite project store, and FFmpeg for export. In scope: start/stop screen+system-audio capture, save raw recordings, simple timeline UI for trimming and cutting clips, overlay captions import/export (SRT), export to MP4 (H.264) with selectable quality presets, project save/load, error handling, and unit/integration tests for capture/save/export flows. Out of scope: live streaming, multi-track advanced editing, broadcast monitoring, cloud sync, and enterprise SLAs.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score61
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
