Image and video decision
RideLens
A competent iOS developer can implement the core recording + GPS-overlay workflow (supported by an existing GPS speedometer repo), but reproducing the full polished App Store product, subscriptions, and ongoing UX polish is non-trivial and will take multi-week effort to match.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All RideLens alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Record video while sampling GPS, render live speedometer overlay in camera preview and on exported video, and save/share the resulting video file.
What it still won’t have
- App Store user base, ratings, and discoverability
- Polish, UX refinements, and frequent app updates from the existing developer
- Any proprietary analytics or usage data the vendor collects
- Managed subscription handling and account recovery already integrated with App Store
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal iOS app in Swift using AVFoundation for camera capture, CoreLocation for GPS sampling, and AVVideoComposition (or Metal) to render and burn live HUD overlays into recorded video. Core features in scope: (1) live preview with overlaid speed/distance/time, (2) record HD video and export file with burned-in overlay, (3) smooth GPS speed computation and basic trip metadata, (4) share/export to Photos or share sheet, (5) StoreKit integration for a monthly subscription. Out of scope: offline vector maps, advanced multi-track editing, cross-platform Android client. Include error handling for missing permissions, tests for GPS-to-speed calculations, CI build config, and instrumentation for basic analytics and crash reporting.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score63
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
