Image and video decision

Reloop

A lone engineer can build a narrow self-hosted workflow that produces short avatar videos using existing open-source projects, but reproducing Reloop's production avatar library, model quality, scaling, and commercial features is impractical.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Reloop alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User supplies product brief and script → choose/avatar or upload photo+voice → generate avatar lip-synced video → auto-add captions, music, transitions → export platform-ready 9:16 video

What it still won’t have

  • Access to Reloop's 700+ curated, production-ready avatar library
  • Proprietary avatar models and any behind-the-scenes training/data used for realism
  • Built-in credit & billing system, team seats and enterprise support
  • Scale, performance optimizations, and ongoing model improvements from vendor

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted AI avatar video generator using Python + FastAPI backend, React frontend, PostgreSQL for simple metadata, and S3-compatible storage. Core features in scope: (1) accept script text and optional single-photo avatar + 30s voice sample upload, (2) voice-clone or TTS fallback producing audio file, (3) run a face-animation model to generate a short lip-synced avatar video clip from the photo and audio, (4) simple compositor that overlays captions and background music and encodes a 9:16 MP4, (5) web UI to select avatar, preview job status, and download export. Out of scope: building a large curated avatar marketplace, multi-seat billing, enterprise scaling, and mobile apps. Require error handling for uploads, model failures and storage errors, unit tests for API endpoints, and end-to-end test that generates and downloads an MP4.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
