Product Hunt

A single developer can build a useful Product Hunt-like listing site (submission, voting, comments, feeds), but the core paid value—large audience, community traction, and brand—cannot be reproduced reasonably, so self-hosting only replaces the software, not Product Hunt’s discoverability and network.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Creators submit a product → community discovers via feeds/categories → users upvote/comment → traction surfaces top launches

What it still won’t have

  • Product Hunt’s large built-in audience and discoverability
  • Established brand and trust that funnels launches and press
  • Community features and active network that drive votes/comments at scale
  • Advertising/monetization relationships and events ecosystem
  • Large-scale moderation and anti-abuse tooling

Build a lightweight Product Hunt-style web app using Next.js, PostgreSQL, and Supabase Auth. Core features in scope: product submission form, product detail pages (images, description, tags), user accounts and OAuth sign-in, upvote/vote counting, comment threads, category/tag pages, basic search (Postgres full-text), daily feed and simple ranking (score + recency), and an admin moderation dashboard. Out of scope: ads/monetization platform, events, large-scale anti-abuse. Include server-side input validation, rate-limiting, error handling, automated tests for submission, auth, voting and comments, and Docker deployment scripts for one small VPS (2 CPU, 4GB RAM).

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Evidence score53

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
