Postcapture

A capable developer can build a one-week, self-hosted replacement that covers the core screenshot API and simple UI; the vendor's value is mainly polish, templates, history, and billing rather than proprietary data or irreplaceable infrastructure.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Paste post URL → fetch post metadata and media → render post in headless browser + apply template CSS → composite/export PNG → serve download or return URL

What it still won’t have

  • Polished library of 33 premium templates and designer-tuned layouts
  • Built-in 30-day screenshot history and user dashboard
  • Billing, Stripe checkout, and subscription management
  • Cross-platform rendering tweaks and QA for many post edge-cases
  • SLA/uptime and scaling expertise for heavy automated usage

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a small PostCapture-style service using Node.js + Express for the API, Playwright for headless rendering, a React single-page UI, Postgres for user/quotas, and S3-compatible storage (MinIO or AWS S3). In scope: POST /api/v1/screenshot that accepts a public post URL and API key, fetch and normalize metadata, render the post DOM in Playwright, apply selectable CSS templates to compose an export, generate a PNG (option for image bytes vs signed download URL), enforce per-key monthly quota, simple web UI to paste links and preview templates, Stripe integration for a single Pro tier (optional). Out of scope: multi-tenant billing plans, admin dashboard for many customers, advanced template editor, and analytics dashboards. Include error handling for rate limits and 429s, retries for transient networking errors, automated tests for the API and rendering pipeline, and Dockerfiles + a simple deployment script.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Price verified on pricing page+3
  • Evidence score84

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
