Photo Dump

A competent technical user can build and self-host a useful Photo Dump replacement in ~32 hours using existing OSS (e.g., PicPeak) and standard cloud storage; there are no strong durable moats on the product pages.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Photo Dump alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Create event → share invite link/QR → guests upload original-quality photos/videos → view and download event gallery

What it still won’t have

  • Native iOS Live Photo playback and special handling
  • Polished mobile app UX and installer/OS integrations
  • Vendor guarantee of “unlimited” storage (you pay storage/bandwidth)
  • Turnkey hosting, monitoring, and product polish

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal Photo Dump clone using: React frontend, Node.js + Express backend, Postgres DB, and AWS S3 (or S3-compatible) for file storage. Implement: (1) event creation API and Postgres schema, (2) invite-link + QR code generation that allows anonymous uploads tied to an event, (3) resumable uploads to S3 preserving original files and EXIF, (4) React event gallery page showing media and new uploads (polling or websockets), (5) server endpoint to stream or zip-download originals. Out of scope: native mobile apps and paid unlimited storage guarantees. Include error handling, input validation, basic tests for APIs, and deployment scripts (Docker + simple droplet/VM).

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 5 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score90

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
