OpenClip

A capable technical user can build a usable OpenClip replacement for core clipping, captioning, and exports in about a week using existing ASR services and FFmpeg; you’d lose the proprietary viral-scoring/UGC generator and enterprise features but not the core workflow.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All OpenClip alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Upload long video -> transcribe & speaker-detect -> detect candidate "viral moments" -> render/reframe clips with burned captions -> schedule or export clips

What it still won’t have

  • Proprietary viral-scoring model and tuned heuristics used at scale
  • AI UGC Studio (generate talking-head ads from a script)
  • Dedicated enterprise queue, priority processing, and dedicated storage
  • Built-in brand-profile management and multi-brand workflows
  • Out-of-the-box multi-platform scheduling integrations and managed publishing

Build a minimal OpenClip replacement as a one-week MVP using Node.js (Express) backend, PostgreSQL for metadata, S3-compatible storage, React frontend (Vite), and FFmpeg for rendering. Core features in scope: file upload and server-side transcoding; send audio to a third-party ASR for transcription and speaker timestamps; implement a heuristic viral-moment detector that scores segments (silence removal, loudness peaks, keyword density, speaker turns); produce reframe/rescale renders (9:16,1:1,16:9) with burned captions using FFmpeg; export MP4s and provide a simple scheduler export that posts to mock social API endpoints (or exports OAuth tokens + CSV). Out of scope: AI UGC Studio (synthesized talking-heads), MCP/agent integrations, enterprise multi-tenant optimizations, priority queues. Require logging, retries for external APIs, rate-limit handling, unit tests for core logic, and end-to-end tests for upload->clip->export flow.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 5 cited sources+3
  • Price verified on pricing page+3
  • Evidence score89

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
