Image and video decision
Motchi.art
A capable developer can build a narrow, self-hosted character-animation pipeline using existing open-source projects, but reproducing a full hosted product (polish, proprietary models, scaling, and support) is not realistic as a drop-in replacement.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Motchi.art alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Upload character (image or model) → select or upload motion source → generate animated sequence → render/export video/frames → store assets and history.
What it still won’t have
- proprietary trained models and any dataset optimizations
- polished UX, onboarding, and customer support
- scalable managed infrastructure and reliability guarantees
- any closed-source integrations or server-side optimizations the vendor provides
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal AI character-animation web service using Python (FastAPI) + React for UI, Postgres for metadata, S3-compatible storage, and GPU inference on a single cloud VM (NVIDIA T4/A10). Core features: upload character (image or simple 3D asset), accept motion input (video or keypoint JSON), run a pluggable inference step that maps motion to the character (provide a local script wrapper to call an open-source model from the supplied repos), post-process and encode output to MP4, and provide download and history. Out of scope: multi-user billing, marketplace, training new models. Include input validation, retries for inference failures, logging, a basic test suite covering uploads, inference wrapper, and render pipeline, and docker-compose or Terraform for deployment. Provide error handling, CI that runs tests, and docs for swapping the model binary.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
