MirrorCast

A capable engineer can build a narrow local‑network screen‑casting client (DLNA + Chromecast) by reusing OS capture APIs and open techniques, but reproducing the full cross‑device polish, IPTV features and broad device compatibility of the paid app is a multi‑week effort and likely not worth dropping the commercial subscription for most users.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All MirrorCast alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Capture iPhone screen, discover and connect to a TV device on local network, encode and stream the captured frames to the device, present device list + playback controls, handle App Store subscriptions for feature unlocks.

What it still won’t have

  • Cross‑brand compatibility edge cases and device-specific workarounds
  • App Store presence, reviews, and discoverability
  • Long‑term polish, bug fixes and performance tuning across many TV models
  • Built-in IPTV playlist UI/UX and curated integrations

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a minimal iOS screen‑mirroring app in Swift (iOS 16+) that mirrors the device display to DLNA and Chromecast devices on the same Wi‑Fi. Use ReplayKit/AVFoundation to capture screen and camera feed, implement mDNS/SSDP discovery for DLNA and Chromecast sinks, transcode/encode captured frames with VideoToolbox into H.264 and serve short HLS segments via an embedded HTTP server (GCDWebServer) for DLNA playback; implement Google Cast sender integration using the GoogleCast iOS SDK for Chromecast. Include a simple SwiftUI device list and controls (connect/disconnect, quality selector, mute), handle errors and network disconnects, gate unlimited casting behind StoreKit subscription, and provide unit tests for the discovery and streaming components plus basic UI integration tests. Out of scope: remote control of TV UIs, full multi‑brand compatibility testing, and IPTV playlist UI beyond a simple URL paste-and-play.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
