Image and video decision

Instapix

A competent technical user can build and run a useful single-tenant replacement in about a week using hosted training/generation providers; the vendor's value is in polish, scale, and commerce rather than irreproducible infrastructure.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Instapix alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Upload selfies → train a private model via a hosted training API → generate images/videos from the model using text prompts → store and download outputs.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished, production-grade web UI and UX refinements (mobile polish, onboarding flows, analytics)
  • Built-in credit packs, payments, and commerce flows as offered by the vendor
  • Scale and operational history (rate limiting, multi-tenant security hardening, incident response)
  • Any proprietary training/infra optimizations the vendor uses with their chosen provider

What remains hard

  • Brand trust(Over 1 million photos and videos created) 1M+
  • Brand trust(Over 50 thousand active creators) 50k+

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-tenant web app using Next.js (React) for frontend, Node.js/Express API, PostgreSQL for metadata, and S3-compatible object storage (e.g. AWS S3) for media. Integrate with a hosted training/generation provider (referenced as FAL AI) via REST to: 1) accept authenticated user uploads of selfies, 2) submit a training job and poll for completion, 3) trigger image/video generation jobs from the trained model, and 4) persist results and serve downloads. Include: user signup/login (email), upload UI with client preview and server validation, studio/aesthetic presets, prompt editor, job queueing, automatic deletion of original selfies after training, simple admin view for job status, and secure storage access URLs. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing/credit-pack commerce, mobile app, advanced image-editing toolset, and large-scale autoscaling. Deliver robust error handling, logging, and unit/integration tests covering uploads, API integrations, and the auto-delete workflow.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 5 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score86

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
