Image and video decision
Image-Charts
A competent engineer can build a usable chart-image API (rendering, caching, CDN) in about a week using open-source chart libs, but matching Image-Charts' enterprise SLA, global managed CDN, on-prem appliance and commercial polish is not realistic as a small DIY effort.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Image-Charts alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- HTTP API accepts chart parameters → render chart server-side to an image → return image URL or binary → cache on CDN and support optional watermarking/custom domain.
What it still won’t have
- Enterprise SLAs, dedicated support and guaranteed 100% uptime claims
- On-premise appliance offering and related compliance guarantees
- High-resolution / compound-chart advanced features (unless implemented)
- Polish of official SDKs, integrations (Zapier/Make) and managed global scaling out of the box
What remains hard

Runnable build prompt
Build a self-hosted Image-Charts replacement: implement a Node.js + Express HTTP API that accepts chart parameters (type, data, labels, colors, size) and returns PNG/WebP images. Use Chart.js or Apache ECharts in a headless Chromium renderer (Puppeteer) or node-canvas to render charts server-side. Store generated images in Google Cloud Storage, serve via Cloud Run behind Cloud CDN with cache-control headers and a deterministic cache key. Support watermark overlay, high-resolution scaling, and a custom-domain option (CNAME + TLS). Provide simple API key auth, basic rate limiting, and SDKs for Node and Python. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing, Zapier/Make connectors, and on-prem VM appliance. Include error handling, retry/backoff for renderer failures, automated tests for rendering and API responses, and deployment scripts (Dockerfile, Terraform or gcloud).
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
