Discord
A competent developer can build and self-host a useful text-based Discord-like server using open-source IM projects, but reproducing Discord’s voice/video quality, ecosystem, scale, and polished cross-platform clients is impractical.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Discord alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Join a server → open a channel → send/receive messages in realtime → view presence and message history
What it still won’t have
- High-quality, low-latency voice/video infrastructure at scale (Discord’s calls/streaming)
- Nitro features, marketplace/shop, and paid subscriptions integration
- Polished cross-platform native clients and app-store distribution
- Large-scale moderation, trust & safety tooling, and global federated server directory
- Official integrations, apps & activities ecosystem
What remains hard
- Brand trust
Discord is great for playing games and chilling with friends, or even building a worldwide community.

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimally-viable self-hosted group chat web app using TypeScript Node.js (Express) + Socket.IO, Postgres for messages and metadata, Redis for presence/ pubsub, React for the frontend, and S3-compatible object storage for uploads. Core features in scope: email/SSO auth and profiles, create/manage servers and text channels, realtime channel message delivery and presence, message persistence with pagination, file upload and download, basic role-based permissions, and admin moderation endpoints. Out of scope: voice/video calling, mobile native apps, Nitro/paid subscriptions, and global server directory. Provide Docker Compose deployment, health checks, logging, centralized config, automated tests (unit + integration), and graceful error handling for all external failures.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
