CursorClip
A technically capable developer can build a smaller native macOS replacement (capture, cursor-tracking, post-processed zoom/export), but reproducing CursorClip's polish, platform optimizations, editor UX, and product packaging is multi-week work—use prior open-source screen recorders if you need a faster route.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All CursorClip alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Capture screen + audio, detect cursor activity and emit zoom/pan keyframes, apply zoom/pan to frames and encode MP4/GIF, provide preview/editor to tweak zoom points and export
What it still won’t have
- Polished native UX and performance tuning across Intel and Apple Silicon
- Polished, consumer-ready editor and QA on many macOS versions
- Marketing, existing user base, and paid support
- One-time payment storefront and license handling via Dodo Payments as provided
What remains hard
- Execution quality
Built with Swift, not Electron
- Execution quality
20.4 MB native app, no Electron

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a native macOS screen recorder in Swift (SwiftUI + AVFoundation/ScreenCaptureKit) that: 1) captures screen frames and system+mic audio; 2) tracks cursor position and clicks to generate auto-zoom/pan keyframes with natural easing; 3) applies zoom/pan transforms to frames and encodes MP4 (H.264) and GIF exports via AVAssetWriter/VideoToolbox; 4) includes a minimal SwiftUI UI to record, preview, save a project, and edit/remove zoom points; 5) gates export behind a simple license file check. Out of scope: cross-platform builds, cloud sync, advanced timeline editing, and marketplace/payments. Include error handling for capture/permission failures, unit tests for keyframe generation, and an integration test that records ~10s and exports an MP4.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score63
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
