Image and video decision
BlitzCut
A single skilled developer can build a functional desktop replacement for the core silence-removal + transcription + export workflow in a multi-week project, but reproducing BlitzCut’s mobile polish, App Store integrations, iCloud sync, subscription UX, and curated subtitle templates is substantial work and would likely lead to a narrower product.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All BlitzCut alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Import video → detect & remove silences → transcribe speech → generate subtitle file and burn/overlay captions → export in target aspect ratios
What it still won’t have
- Mobile-native polishing, App Store integration, and in-app subscription management
- Built-in iCloud sync across iOS/macOS
- Polished timeline UX, touch interactions, and short-form onboarding
- Proprietary subtitle styles and animations (prebuilt templates)
- Ongoing App Store updates, crash analytics, and app-store marketing
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a cross-platform desktop/video tool using Electron + React (or Tauri + React) with FFmpeg for processing. Core features in scope: import local video files, store simple project metadata, detect and remove silences (FFmpeg-based pipeline), upload audio segments to a cloud ASR (configurable provider) and generate SRT/VTT, overlay/burn subtitles with selectable fonts/colors, export presets for 9:16 and 16:9 with cropping/resize. Out of scope: App Store packaging, iCloud sync, mobile-specific touch UI, subscription billing. Include error handling for corrupt inputs, long-running export jobs, and retries for ASR requests; include unit and integration tests for the processing pipeline and a simple end-to-end smoke test for import→transcribe→export.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score64
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
