Developer tools decision
Urltoany
A competent developer can build and operate a useful subset (Markdown + PDF + basic UI) in about a week; the site’s claimed user scale and polish are the main paid-product advantages to keep if you need volume or many output formats.

Not priced
No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.
$50one-off26 h to build
$20/mo6 h/mo upkeep
No published price to break even against.
No open-source build does this yet
Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.
What a replacement has to do
- Fetch a public URL, render it (JS if needed), extract the main content, convert to target format, return downloadable result.
What it still won’t have
- Many alternative converters (images, QR, MP3, JSON, XML) unless separately implemented
- Browser extension and polished UI/analytics
- Large-scale reliability and CDN-backed performance for high volume
- Any proprietary optimizations or tuning the site authors may have
What remains hard
- Brand trust

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a small URL-to-document conversion service using Node.js, Express, Puppeteer (headless Chrome), Turndown (HTML→Markdown), and an S3-compatible storage. Core features in scope: HTTP API + single-page UI to submit a public URL, server-side page rendering, main-content extraction (Readability), HTML→Markdown conversion, PDF generation via Puppeteer, single-file download links, basic rate-limiting and logging. Out of scope: user accounts, browser extension, MP3/text-to-speech, QR generation, and paid-tier billing. Include error handling for timeouts, invalid URLs and non-200 responses, CI tests for the extraction and conversion pipeline, and a Dockerfile for deployment.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- 3 cited sources+3
- Evidence score81
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
