Developer tools decision
Translate-API.com
A competent developer can build a small translation-proxy API that replaces this service for basic needs within a week; open-source projects like LibreTranslate provide ready self-hostable alternatives if you prefer not to build.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Translate-API.com alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Provide a REST endpoint that accepts text + target language, forwards to a chosen provider, returns translated text.
What it still won’t have
- Hosted SLA and uptime guarantees
- Built-in multi-provider billing and usage dashboards
- Enterprise features (RBAC, SAML, contracts)
- Operational support and compliance assurances
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal translation-proxy API using Node.js (Express), Redis for caching, and Postgres for logging; containerize with Docker and provide a Docker Compose for local runs. Core features in scope: - POST /translate accepting {text, source_lang (optional), target_lang, provider} and returning translated text - Integrations with at least two provider backends (implement Google Cloud Translation and DeepL client adapters; provider keys loaded from env) - Simple API-key authentication and per-key rate limiting (Redis) - Caching translated results (Redis) with TTL and cache-key derivation by text+lang+provider - Usage logging stored to Postgres and an endpoint to retrieve recent usage - Error handling, retries for transient provider errors, and unit tests for core adapters. Out of scope: UI dashboard, billing, enterprise SSO. Include automated tests and a README with deployment steps for a single small cloud VM (DigitalOcean/AWS), and health-check endpoints. How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score90
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
