Tower
A technical user can build a useful, narrow Git GUI (clone/commit/push/visual graph) within about a week, but reproducing Tower's polish, Pro/enterprise features, and brand/support is impractical for one person.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Tower alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- A minimal replacement provides a GUI for cloning, branching, committing, and pushing/pulling repositories and viewing a visual commit graph.
What it still won’t have
- Polished cross-platform native UI and long polish/UX
- Advanced Pro features (stacked branches, automatic branch management, merge-detection)
- Enterprise features (SAML SSO, invoicing, deployment/activation flows)
- Brand support, documentation, video courses and extended customer support
What remains hard
- Brand trust

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal cross-platform Git desktop client using Electron + React (or Tauri + Svelte) that shells the git CLI (or uses nodegit/libgit2). Implement: repository cloning and opening, an interactive commit graph view, file tree and diff viewer, stage/unstage hunks and create commits, basic push/pull/fetch and branch create/checkout, and Git hosting integration to create/view pull requests for GitHub/GitLab via their REST APIs. Out of scope: advanced branch automation, stacked-branches UX, enterprise SSO, installers signing. Include error handling for missing git, auth failures, and network errors; include unit tests for core git command wrappers and an end-to-end smoke test for cloning and commit flow.

How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score67
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
