Developer tools decision

Straye

A competent developer can build a useful self-hosted FiveM asset cache for their own needs, but reproducing a production-grade hosted product (global CDN, DDoS protection, commercial SLAs) is non-trivial.

Not priced

No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.

You’d pay instead

$100one-off60 h to build

No published price to break even against.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Proxy requests for FiveM assets, cache assets on a backing store, serve cached assets with correct headers and invalidation.

What it still won’t have

  • Hosted CDN edge presence and global POPs
  • Built-in DDoS/protection and traffic absorption
  • Commercial SLA, support, and packaged integrations
  • Polished admin UI and usage analytics
  • Any proprietary optimizations or custom caching infra

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Build a lightweight FiveM asset caching proxy in Go or Node (recommend Go + Gin) that: 1) accepts incoming FiveM asset requests and uses a deterministic cache key based on upstream URL and content hash; 2) on miss, streams the upstream response into a persistent store (local filesystem or S3) while proxying bytes to the client; 3) serves cached objects with correct Content-Type, Cache-Control, and support for TTL + stale-while-revalidate; 4) exposes /metrics (Prometheus) and a minimal admin endpoint showing hit/miss rates and storage usage; 5) include Dockerfile, systemd unit and a Kubernetes Deployment manifest, health checks, structured logging, graceful shutdown, and retry/backoff on upstream failures; 6) include unit tests for cache-key logic and integration tests that run against a local object store (minio) and an HTTP upstream simulator. Out of scope: global CDN edge distribution, DDoS mitigation appliances, and paid SLA/support packaging.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • Evidence score52

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
