OpenInbox.io

A single competent developer can build a useful, limited replacement in ~40 hours using existing inbound-mail providers and open-source building blocks; the hosted product's scale, apps, anti-abuse, and polish are the main things you'd give up.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All OpenInbox.io alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Create disposable inbox → receive email via provider webhook → store parsed message → deliver to caller via API/webhook and surface in UI

What it still won’t have

  • Mobile apps (iOS/Android) and Chrome extension
  • Polished UI/UX and product polish (notifications, inbox switcher)
  • Built-in anti-abuse and scale protections used by the hosted service
  • Multi-domain/custom-domain management UI and high-volume email routing limits
  • SLA, priority support, and historic analytics

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Build a minimal disposable-email service using Node.js (Express) + PostgreSQL, React frontend, and an inbound-mail provider (Mailgun or SendGrid) for SMTP-to-webhook. Core features in-scope: API to create/list/delete inboxes with X-API-Key auth, inbound webhook handler that parses MIME and attachments and stores messages, OTP extraction from email bodies, WebSocket endpoint and webhook forwarding for real-time delivery, simple React UI to generate and view inboxes/emails, inbox expiry cleanup job, basic conditional routing rules (subject/from/to), and dashboard to manage API keys. Out of scope: native mobile apps, Chrome extension, large-scale anti-abuse systems, and enterprise billing. Include input validation, error handling, unit and integration tests for API and webhook handlers, Dockerfile and a deployment guide for Vercel/Heroku, and scripts to configure DNS MX or provider routes.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
