Developer tools decision

OpenAlternative

A capable developer can rebuild the core directory and submission flows, but they cannot cheaply reproduce the site's existing audience, SEO, sponsors, and brand-driven value—so rebuilding is viable for a narrow self-hosted alternative but not a full replacement of the paid product's market position.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Allow users to browse and search a curated database of software alternatives, view detail pages, submit new alternatives, and subscribe to a newsletter.

What it still won’t have

  • existing traffic and SEO
  • brand recognition and trust (12K+ subscribers, sponsors)
  • curated database and editorial curation
  • affiliate relationships and revenue
  • any sponsor/partner placements

Runnable build prompt

Build a lightweight directory site (Next.js + React frontend, PostgreSQL backend, Node.js/Express API or FastAPI) that supports: browse by category, paginated lists, tool detail pages with metadata (license, stars, repo link, tags), faceted search (Meilisearch or Postgres full-text), submission form with admin moderation, newsletter signup (SendGrid/Mailgun), and sponsor/affiliate fields. Out of scope: building a large editorial dataset or SEO migration. Include error handling, input validation, tests for API endpoints and critical UI flows, and deployment scripts for a small VPS (Docker + docker-compose).

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score55

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
