Open Source Startups

A capable developer can build and maintain a lightweight GitHub-synced directory replacement in a few weeks; major durable value (brand, curated reviews, partners, prebuilt dataset) would be lost but core functionality is reproducible and prior-art directories exist.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Open Source Startups alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Sync GitHub repo metadata, index projects for search/browse, render listing UI, accept project submissions, and run hourly updates.

What it still won’t have

  • Existing brand and community trust
  • Curated editorial picks and developer ratings/reviews
  • Pre-populated dataset (856 curated projects and 15.5M GitHub stars)
  • Partner integrations and cross-promotion relationships listed on the site

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a GitHub-native curated directory web app using: Postgres, Node.js (Express) backend, a scheduled worker (node-cron) for GitHub API sync, and a React SPA (Vite). In scope: database schema for projects/categories/submissions, a worker that hourly fetches repo metadata from the GitHub API and upserts projects, a REST search/browse API (Postgres full-text), frontend listing pages, project detail pages, submission form with server-side validation, and a small admin UI for approving submissions. Out of scope: billing, multi-tenant teams, advanced editorial CMS, and third-party partnership features. Include error handling, retries for API rate limits, basic tests for sync logic and API endpoints, and containerized deployment (Dockerfiles) with a simple deploy script for a single VPS or managed container host.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Evidence score58

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
