Health, home and travel decision

FlightyFlow

A competent developer can reproduce the core flight-tracking features in about a week using available open-source projects; the App Store polish, native Live Activity integration, and subscription/Apple-specific distribution are what you'd lose.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All FlightyFlow alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User adds flight by number+date → system queries flight-data providers → store and monitor flight state → push notifications for changes → display flight on interactive map and timeline.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished native iOS UI/animations and App Store polish
  • Built-in subscription handling and App Store in-app purchases flow
  • Priority support and curated content
  • Any proprietary historical data or backend optimizations not documented on the App Store page
  • Apple Live Activities lock-screen integration (would require native iOS work)

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal flight-tracking service using Next.js for the frontend, Node/Express backend, Postgres for storage, and a worker (BullMQ) for scheduled polling. Core features in scope: flight lookup by number+date (uses a third-party flight-data API), background status polling every 15 minutes with change detection, push notifications via APNs, interactive map view using Mapbox or Leaflet, and a travel timeline. Out of scope: App Store in-app subscription integration, advanced analytics, and multi-platform native apps. Include error handling, rate-limit/backoff for API calls, unit and integration tests, Dockercompose for local dev, and deployment scripts for a single small VPS (DigitalOcean) and documented steps to add a flight-data API key and map key.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5

  • Evidence score84

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
