50 Hacks
A single developer can reproduce the core site (submissions, voting, comments, Top 50) in about a week and run it cheaply; the main durable advantage is existing traffic/brand which cannot be recreated easily.

Not priced
No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.
$100one-off36 h to build
$30/mo6 h/mo upkeep
No published price to break even against.
No open-source build does this yet
Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.
What a replacement has to do
- Users submit short 'hacks', other visitors upvote and comment, the system ranks the top 50 and displays lists (Hot / New / Top).
What it still won’t have
- Existing site traffic and brand recognition ('destination of thousands of visitors')
- Built-in audience and SEO ranking
- Any existing advertising relationships and placement
- Historic comments, votes and social proof unless migrated
What remains hard
- Brand trust
50 Hacks is the destination of thousands of visitors who are looking for solutions to get better every day.
First-year cost
No published price
50 Hacks does not publish a price we could read, so there is nothing to compare against. What building costs is below.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a single-repo web app (Node.js + Express backend, PostgreSQL, and a React or Svelte frontend) that implements: public listing pages (Hot/New/Top), individual hack pages, a no-account submission form with input validation and basic spam checks, upvote and comment endpoints with per-IP rate limiting, a scheduled job to compute Top 50 by score, and a small admin interface to remove/flag items. Out of scope: paid advertising platform, advanced moderation AI, federated accounts. Include Dockerfile(s), CI for tests, error handling, basic unit/integration tests, and documentation for deployment to a single VPS or a managed platform (Render/Heroku).
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score82
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
