AI assistants and search decision
Don Prompt
A technical user can reproduce the core product (searchable prompt library + one‑time checkout + gated downloads) in about a week, but you won't get the vendor's curated, continuously updated prompt collection, lifetime updates, or founder-curated materials that constitute much of the product's paid value.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Don Prompt alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Browse prompt library → copy or download prompts and flows → apply prompts in ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini or use delivered workflows
What it still won’t have
- Curated, continuously updated prompts and new systems pushed by the vendor
- Founder-curated guides, translations and Notion workspace included in paid tiers
- Built-in 'Prompt of the Day' email and community touchpoints
- Warranty/refund handling and hosted checkout UX refinements
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a single-developer self-hosted prompt library and gated-download storefront using Next.js (app router), Tailwind CSS, SQLite (Prisma), Vercel or Netlify hosting, Stripe Checkout for one-time payments, and SendGrid for transactional email. Core features in scope: static marketing pages, searchable prompt & systems catalog (importable JSON), Stripe checkout and webhook to grant access, authenticated member area to download purchased prompts, admin script to import/export prompts, automated transactional emails and refund handling. Out of scope: multi-currency subscriptions, complex analytics dashboards, multi-user team seats, proprietary model integrations. Include server-side validation, error handling, webhook retry handling, unit tests for payment flow and access control, and basic end-to-end test for purchase+download flow.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 7 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
