Zoho Books

A small team can reproduce a useful subset (invoicing, payments, simple reports), but Zoho's value comes from scale, owned infrastructure, integrations, and brand—hard to fully replace for enterprises.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Zoho Books alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Create and send invoices, record payments and refunds, store customer records, generate basic financial reports, and reconcile transactions.

What it still won’t have

  • Integrated global data-center scale and SLA-backed hosting
  • Deep single-vendor integrations across Zoho's suite
  • Brand trust and enterprise sales/support reach
  • Proprietary R&D and platform features (Zia agents, unified admin)

What remains hard

  • Infrastructure at scalewe prefer to own the entire technology stack, including running our data centers globally.
  • Brand trust130 M+ Users Globally

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted invoicing-and-basic-accounting web app using Node.js (Express), React, and Postgres. Implement: user auth (email+password), customer CRUD, invoice creation with PDF templating (html-pdf or Puppeteer), Stripe payment links and webhook handling to mark invoices paid, CSV bank-transaction import and a simple matching UI (rule-based matching), and A/R and P&L CSV export. Out of scope: payroll, multi-currency complex tax rules, full double-entry ledger. Include input validation, error handling, unit tests for API routes, and Docker Compose for local deployment. Provide deployment notes for a t3.small EC2 + managed Postgres (AWS RDS) and S3-compatible storage for PDFs.

How the score was reached

  • 4 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Hard moats found in the evidence-3
  • Evidence score61

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
