WA School Reports

A technical user can build a useful, privacy-preserving replacement in about a week of work; the SCSA-alignment and token commerce are prompt engineering and straightforward integrations rather than durable moats.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All WA School Reports alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Teacher selects student and subject, set achievement level/tone/length, add notes → backend fills a prompt template and calls an LLM to generate a draft → show editable draft, consume one token, allow export.

What it still won’t have

  • SCSA-tuned prompt library and ongoing prompt improvements
  • Token commerce UI/UX polish and one-off purchase UX
  • Priority support and teacher-facing content (guides, examples) produced by the vendor
  • Any site-specific moderation or legal review carried out by the vendor

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-tenant web app (Node.js + Express backend, PostgreSQL, React frontend) that replicates the WA School Reports core flow: 1) account auth (email), student list with anonymised codes, and token balance; 2) token purchase API endpoint (simulate payments with Stripe test mode) and token-pack management; 3) server-side prompt templates for subjects/year levels and achievement scales and an LLM adapter (OpenAI-compatible API) with request/response logging and token consumption accounting; 4) responsive editor UI to pick subject/year/achievement, enter teacher notes, generate a draft, edit, and export as PDF; 5) basic admin pages to view purchases and audit logs. Out of scope: training a proprietary model, multi-school tenancy, and official SCSA validation. Include error handling, input validation, automated tests for backend endpoints, and deployment scripts (Docker + managed DB).

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
