AI assistants and search decision
StartClaw
A capable developer can recreate a useful subset (web automation, code sandboxing, messaging integrations, scheduling) but the full hosted product’s compliance, isolated infra, live session streaming, and polished marketplace are hard to reproduce and justify continuing to self-host for enterprise use.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All StartClaw alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Deploy an agent, have it browse a site or run code, extract/transform results, and send output to a channel or store
What it still won’t have
- SOC 2 compliance and audited controls
- Fully isolated VM-per-agent infrastructure with provider-managed encryption
- Hosted live desktop/session streaming and recordings
- Built-in long-term enterprise memory with managed retention
- Polished marketplace and one-click deploy UX
What remains hard
- Compliance and regulation
SOC 2 compliant
- Compliance and regulation
Each AI runs in isolated infrastructure. Your data is encrypted and never shared.

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted AI-agent runner using Node.js + Express, Postgres, and Docker for sandboxing. Core features in scope: (1) an API to create/deploy a named agent, (2) a headless browser worker using Puppeteer to navigate, fill forms, extract data, and capture screenshots, (3) a Docker-based code execution sandbox that runs Python/JS snippets and returns outputs/files, (4) integrations to send/receive messages via Telegram and Slack bot APIs, (5) a cron-style scheduler to run agent tasks and persist task history and agent memory in Postgres, (6) basic web UI to start/stop agents and view task logs. Out of scope: per-agent isolated VMs, SOC2 audit, live desktop streaming/recordings, enterprise multi-region infra, and a paid marketplace. Deliverables must include error handling, authentication for the API, unit and integration tests, and deployment docs for a single VPS using Docker Compose.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 6 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score61
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
