AI assistants and search decision

SheetAI.app

A technical user can implement a useful subset (BYOK Sheets functions and basic Replicate media integration) but reproducing hosted convenience, scale, billing/credit packs, and product polish would be multi-week and costly, so keeping a paid plan makes sense for non-developers.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All SheetAI.app alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User writes a SHEETAI(...) formula in Google Sheets, the add-on calls model APIs (OpenAI/Claude/Gemini/Grok or Replicate) to produce text or media, and the result is written back to the sheet (bulk fill-down support).

What it still won’t have

  • Hosted 'no-key' plan and associated convenience (you must supply and pay for your own model keys unless you build hosted billing)
  • Product polish, priority support, and cross-account license management
  • Scale-tested reliability and the 198k+ install user trust/market presence
  • Built-in credit packs and one-click purchase flow

What remains hard

  • Brand trust198k+ Installs, rated 4.5 /5 ⭐️ by 45 reviews
  • Brand trustTrusted by top universities, companies and professionals

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal SheetAI replacement: implement a Google Workspace Add-on (Apps Script frontend + React sidebar served from a Node.js/Express backend) that exposes a custom Sheets function SHEETAI(prompt) and SHEETAI_IMAGE(prompt). Core features in scope: (1) add-on install and OAuth for connecting a per-user API key (BYOK) and an optional hosted mode tied to Stripe subscriptions; (2) function plumbing to send requests to a backend proxy which forwards to OpenAI-compatible LLMs for text and to Replicate for images/video/audio; (3) a job queue + worker (BullMQ or RabbitMQ) to support bulk fill-down and long-running media generation; (4) store media in S3/GCS and return public URLs into the sheet; (5) caching of identical prompts to reduce duplicate model calls, basic retry on transient errors, and quota checks for hosted users. Out of scope: training proprietary models, collaborative multi-user editing, analytics dashboard beyond per-user usage, enterprise domain licensing. Include unit and integration tests for the backend, error handling for API failures, and deployment scripts (Docker + Terraform for minimal infra).

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
