RSVP Reader - Speed Reading App

A capable developer can build a focused RSVP reader (paste/URL import, ORP highlighting, adjustable WPM, local saves) in about a week and maintain it cheaply; the paid app's extra integrations, OCR, and polish are the main things you'd give up.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All RSVP Reader - Speed Reading App alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User imports text -> app displays words one-at-a-time at chosen WPM with ORP highlight -> user adjusts speed and resumes progress later.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished native iOS UX and visual polish (Liquid Glass interface)
  • Safari share extension and deep system integrations
  • Camera OCR import and advanced EPUB/PDF parsing
  • Pro features: training drills, achievements, detailed stats and cross-service imports (X, Reddit, Substack, etc.)
  • App Store distribution, reviews, and branding

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build an iOS SwiftUI app (iOS 17+) with a local-only RSVP reader using Swift + Combine and a small local CoreData or SQLite store. Core features in scope: (1) RSVP display engine that times per-word rendering, implements Optimal Recognition Point (ORP) highlighting, and adds short pauses at punctuation; (2) text ingestion via paste and URL article extraction (HTML -> readable text); (3) local library with saved items, resume position, and bookmarks; (4) reader controls: adjustable WPM slider, start/pause, Cruise/Sprint toggle, and basic themes and fonts. Out of scope: camera OCR, full EPUB/PDF rendering with images/footnotes, Safari share extension, multi-service imports (X/Reddit/Substack), analytics backend, and subscription payments. Include error handling, unit tests for parsing and reader timing, UI tests for core flows, and a README with local build and run steps.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
