Finance and accounting decision

Rocket Money

A capable developer can build a useful subscription tracker, dashboard, and cancellation workflow, but Rocket Money’s human concierge, large user base, and operational scale that enable negotiated bill savings are not feasible to replicate for a small self-hosted replacement.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • Link accounts, detect recurring payments, surface subscriptions in a dashboard, allow user-driven cancellation requests, show budgets and spending trends.

What it still won’t have

  • Human concierge that negotiates bills and completes cancellations for users
  • Years of aggregated transaction data and scale used for negotiating and automation
  • Operational scale (2.5M cancellations, 10M members) that enables trust and leverage with merchants
  • Proprietary bill-negotiation processes and relationships

What remains hard

  • Execution qualityPremium is more than just software features! You’ll also get real access to humans who can help you cancel subscriptions, lower your bills or help with questions about your personal finances.
  • Brand trustJoin 10 million+ members
  • Infrastructure at scaleWe've cancelled nearly 2.5 million subscriptions on behalf of our members.

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal subscription-management web app using React for frontend, Node.js/Express for backend, Postgres for data, and Plaid (or a similar connector) for account linking. In scope: account linking, transaction ingestion, recurring-transaction detection, subscription dashboard, templated cancellation request generation and status tracking, basic budgeting and upcoming-bills alerts, background jobs, user auth, and email notifications. Out of scope: automated merchant negotiation, hiring human concierge staff, bank-grade custodial services, and credit-report integrations. Include error handling for connector failures, retries for ingestion jobs, secure storage of tokens (encrypted at rest), and unit/integration tests for detection logic and API endpoints.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 4 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Hard moats found in the evidence-3
  • Evidence score61

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
