Finance and accounting decision

Ramp Plus

Build a narrow expense-and-AP MVP yourself (ingest, OCR, approvals, exports), but keep paying for Ramp for card issuing, global banking, enterprise integrations, and the platform AI/network effects that are hard to reproduce.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Ramp Plus alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • A minimal replacement would let teams ingest transactions, collect receipts, run OCR to extract invoice/receipt fields, apply simple policy rules/approvals, and export coded transactions to accounting software.

What it still won’t have

  • card issuing and banking relationships (virtual/physical cards)
  • regulated banking/treasury services (FDIC, wires, ACH)
  • global local-currency payouts and reimbursements
  • enterprise integrations (Workday, Oracle) and white-glove support
  • proprietary AI agents and continuously trained models tied across customers

What remains hard

  • Network effectsAI that learns from your team. And gets smarter with every team that joins.
  • Brand trustJoin 70,000 of the world’s most ambitious companies growing 3.2x faster than the average American business.

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted expense-management app using Node.js (Express), PostgreSQL, Next.js for frontend, and Tesseract OCR for receipt parsing. In scope: CSV import of card transactions, receipt image upload + OCR extraction (date, amount, vendor), matching receipts to transactions, simple configurable policy rules (limit, required receipt), approval workflow (submit, approve/reject) with email notifications, export to QuickBooks/Xero-compatible CSV, and a small admin dashboard for search and reports. Out of scope: issuing cards, bank integrations (ACH/wires), multi-entity enterprise features, treasury services, and advanced AI agents. Include error handling, logging, unit tests for critical modules, and a Docker Compose dev+prod deployment manifest.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
