Prompt Sloth

A capable developer can build a useful, smaller replacement (browser extension + lightweight backend) in a few weeks; the product's value is largely execution and polish rather than proprietary data or network effects.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Prompt Sloth alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Take a user's rough prompt from the page, send it to an LLM with a template/role/context, receive an improved prompt, and inject it back into the target chat box; store templates and history.

What it still won’t have

  • Polish of a shipped cross-browser extension (edge-cases across many AI tools)
  • Existing community template library and shared templates
  • Desktop app integration with system-wide ⌘E and app-specific quirks
  • Priority support and product updates from the vendor

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal Prompt Sloth replacement: implement a Chrome extension (content script + background) and a small Node.js/Express backend. Stack: Chrome MV3 extension, React (popup/overlay) or plain JS for UI, Node.js + Express backend, Postgres (or SQLite) for encrypted templates/history, and Google OAuth for optional sync. In scope: detect and read focused chat input on popular AI sites, show an 'Improve' button, send prompt+selected template to the backend, call an LLM provider (configurable OpenAI-compatible endpoint) to produce an improved prompt, return and inject improved prompt into the input, store encrypted history and allow creating/saving templates (//shortcut shorthand). Out of scope: packaging a native desktop app and advanced cross-app keyboard hooks. Include error handling for network/LLM errors, input sanitization, integration tests for content script messaging, and unit tests for backend template rendering and API calls.

  • Evidence score63

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
