Finance and accounting decision

PocketSmith

A capable developer can implement the core workflows (feeds, categorization, forecasting, dashboards) in about a week, but PocketSmith's large bank-connection coverage, mature UX, and established user base are costly to reproduce, so self-hosting a narrower workflow makes sense while keeping the paid product for full coverage.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. What a replacement has to do

  • Import bank transactions, auto-categorize with rules, store transactions and accounts, run cashflow forecasting, and show dashboards and reports.

What it still won’t have

  • Scale of bank connections (PocketSmith claims 12,000+ institutions)
  • Polished, mature UX and niche features (calendar budgeting, saved searches, many dashboard widgets)
  • Long-running product development and reliability built over many years
  • Existing user data, migration tooling, and community/trust

What remains hard

  • Brand trustOver 382,000 people use PocketSmith to manage their money and reach their financial goals.
  • Integration maintenanceWe save you the hassle of importing your transactions by connecting to over 12,000 institutions worldwide.

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted PocketSmith-like service using PostgreSQL, a Node.js (Express) API, React frontend, and Plaid/TrueLayer for bank aggregation. In scope: user signup/login, connect one bank via aggregator, transaction ingestion and normalization, editable categorization rules, recurring transaction handling, a daily-balance cashflow projection for 1–30 years, a dashboard with charts and a budget calendar, CSV import for historic data, and basic collaborator sharing. Out of scope: building a proprietary bank-connection network, mobile apps, and enterprise features. Include error handling, rate-limit/backoff for aggregator APIs, CI tests for ingestion, forecasting logic tests, and deployment scripts for a single VPS (Docker).

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
