Finance and accounting decision
Pluma
A capable technical user can build a useful self-hosted personal finance tool (or run existing OSS), but reproducing a polished, hosted product with bank sync and commercial polish is a larger effort better solved by using or self-hosting mature prior-art projects.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Pluma alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Record transactions, categorize spending, view simple reports/budgets.
What it still won’t have
- Polished, product-grade UX and mobile apps
- Bank aggregation and automatic sync integrations
- Commercial support, SLAs, and hosted backups
- Branding, analytics, and marketing features
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted personal finance web app using: backend Node.js (NestJS or Express) + TypeScript, Postgres, Prisma or TypeORM for DB, React for frontend, Chart.js for charts, Docker for deployment. Core features in scope: user auth (email/password), account and transaction CRUD, CSV import (bank export), categories and simple budgets, ledger and monthly spending chart, database migrations, HTTPS deployment with backups. Out of scope: bank aggregation (Plaid), mobile native apps, multi-tenant SaaS billing, extensive reporting. Include input validation, error handling, tests for API endpoints, and a deployment Dockerfile + docker-compose. Document setup and backup/restore steps.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
