Play Designer Pro

A technical user can build a useful subset (drawing editor, storage, basic quiz generation, and reporting) but the complete, polished product (refined quiz generation, import robustness, UX polish, and scale) is multi-week and benefits from the vendor's product polish and ongoing support.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Play Designer Pro alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Coach draws plays and formations in a canvas → system converts play assets into quiz questions → players take quizzes → system records scores and shows performance summaries.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished, battle-tested play-drawing UX and interaction polish
  • Auto-generated quiz quality tuning and edge-case handling
  • Turnkey mobile-friendly UI and cross-device testing
  • Commercial support, uptime guarantees, and regular feature updates
  • Analytics/insights polish (leaderboards, performance summaries) and scalability testing

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-tenant web app (React + TypeScript front end, SVG/Canvas editor using Konva or similar, Node.js/Express backend, Postgres DB, file storage on S3-compatible bucket) that lets a coach: (1) draw and save plays and formation templates on an interactive canvas, (2) import play assets from PDF/PowerPoint/images (convert pages to images and allow manual crop), (3) auto-generate simple multiple-choice and short-answer quiz items from play metadata using deterministic rules, (4) invite players and enforce coach/player roles, (5) record quiz attempts and display a reporting dashboard (leaderboard, per-player performance over time). Out of scope: advanced ML-generated questions, mobile native apps, and multi-tenant billing. Include authentication, input validation, error handling, unit tests for backend APIs, and end-to-end tests for core flows (draw/save/import/quiz/report). Provide Docker compose for local dev and a deployment guide for one small VPS with costs estimated.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 4 cited sources+3
  • Price verified on pricing page+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score67

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
