Janus
A competent developer can build a useful replacement: the core (upload, LLM card generation, review UI, Anki export) is implementable and prior open-source projects demonstrate feasibility; Janus's production polish and support are what you'd be trading away.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Janus alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Upload content → extract and preprocess text → generate flashcards with an LLM using prompts and heuristics → present cards for review/highlight edits → export deck (Anki/Mochi/etc).
What it still won’t have
- Polished production UI and onboarding flow
- Official premium support
- Any proprietary prompt library and quality-tuning Janus provides
- Operational reliability, analytics and team workflows at scale
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a lightweight AI flashcard generator as a single-developer project using Node.js (Express) backend, PostgreSQL for metadata, S3-compatible storage, React frontend, and OpenAI-compatible LLM API. Core features in scope: upload PDF/Markdown/URL/YouTube, text extraction and chunking, prompt-engineered LLM card generation (Q&A, cloze, image-occlusion), per-deck review UI with highlight-to-flashcard and reusable prompt templates, and Anki/Mochi/SuperMemo export. Out of scope: team billing, analytics dashboard, enterprise SSO. Include tests for parsing and generation flows, error handling for failed extractions and API errors, and deployment scripts (Docker + single-node VPS).
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score93
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
