Nexpend

A solo developer can build a basic subscription tracker and reminders, but reproducing Nexpend's polish, App Store distribution, seamless cross-device iCloud sync, and product design would take more time and effort than a minimal replacement merits.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Nexpend alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Add subscriptions with price, billing cycle and payment method → receive reminders before renewals → view calendar/list and insights to cancel or downgrade.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished commercial UX and design polish
  • App Store distribution, review, and marketing
  • Tight iCloud integration and seamless cross-device sync without an account
  • Professional QA and analytics
  • Brand trust and user base

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a cross-platform mobile subscription tracker using Flutter, Dart, and SQLite (sqflite) with local encrypted storage (sqlcipher/Flutter plugin). Core features in scope: add/edit/delete subscriptions (name, price, currency, billing cycle, payment method, tags), calendar and searchable list UIs, scheduled local push notifications (1 day/3 days/1 week) using Firebase Cloud Messaging or platform local notifications, fetch currency rates from a public API and apply conversions, CSV export/import, device backup/restore. Out of scope: bank account linking, automated cancellation, server-side user accounts. Include error handling, input validation, unit and widget tests, and CI for Android/iOS builds.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score60

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
