Learning and careers decision

Mathani

A technical user can build a useful memorization app (lessons, spaced repetition, audio, quizzes) using the prior-art repo for recitation alignment, but the full paid product’s polish, curated reciters/audio rights, App Store native UX, and user base are not reproduced cheaply.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Mathani alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User practices memorization via short lessons and quizzes, reviews via spaced-repetition schedule, listens to recitations, and tracks progress/streaks.

What it still won’t have

  • App Store presence and native iOS polish
  • Curated recitation audio from named reciters and any licensing they provide
  • Existing user base, ratings, and live community features (leaderboards/team battles)
  • Marketing, customer support, and trust associated with the vendor

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a minimal Quran-memorization web app using Node.js (Express), Postgres, React (or React Native for mobile), and S3-compatible object storage + CloudFront. Core features in scope: 1) import Quran text mapped by surah/ayah into Postgres, 2) per-user spaced-repetition scheduler and daily goal engine, 3) lesson UI with quizzes (fill-in-the-blank, ordering, next-ayah), 4) audio playback per ayah from object storage, 5) user accounts and subscription gating via Stripe (or verify App Store receipts for iOS builds), 6) progress/stats and streaks, 7) basic admin UI to upload audio. Out of scope: training speech models and licensed distribution of reciters' audio. Include error handling, input validation, unit tests for scheduler logic, and end-to-end tests for the lesson flow.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
