Email and newsletters decision

Maely

A competent technical user can build and self-host a useful AI email composer + send workflow in a few weeks; prior open-source email platforms show the send/analytics core is reproducible, but you'll lose product polish, deliverability services, and commercial support.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Maely alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • User enters brief → AI generates email draft → user edits in rich editor → send via SMTP/ESP → store template and track delivery/opens

What it still won’t have

  • Polished onboarding and UX polish
  • Deliverability monitoring and dedicated IP / sending reputation
  • Commercial support, SLA, and team billing/workspace features
  • Any proprietary integrations or closed-source optimisations Maely provides

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal AI-assisted email-marketing web app using Next.js + React for frontend, Node.js + Express for backend, Postgres for storage, and deploy on a single DigitalOcean droplet. Core features in scope: (1) LLM-driven email generation endpoint (calls OpenAI or compatible API) that returns subject and HTML-safe body given a short brief; (2) rich-text HTML email editor with preview and template save/load; (3) SMTP and one provider integration (SendGrid or Mailgun) to send individual emails and simple campaigns; (4) persist templates, drafts, and send logs in Postgres; (5) basic open and click tracking via pixel and redirect endpoints; (6) user auth (single-user) and simplistic UI. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing, advanced deliverability tooling (dedicated IPs), granular analytics dashboards, and team features. Include input validation, error handling, unit tests for core backend routes, and deployment scripts (Dockerfile + docker-compose).

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score86

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
