Email and newsletters decision

Leave Me Alone

A technically capable developer can build a useful unsubscribe+rollup tool in ~1 week and maintain it; durable value from audited GDPR/security claims and trust is harder to replicate, so small teams may prefer paying for the hosted service for compliance and polish.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • Connect to a user's mailbox, discover subscription emails, follow unsubscribe links or send unsubscribe requests, and optionally aggregate remaining newsletters into scheduled digests.

What it still won’t have

  • Google Verified Security Audited & Certified status
  • EU GDPR compliance assertion / any audited compliance
  • Hosted privacy guarantees and operational support
  • Shielded Emails (private addresses) and managed Rollups at scale
  • Cross-provider polish and UI/UX for non-technical users

What remains hard

  • Compliance and regulationGoogle Verified Security Audited & Certified
  • Compliance and regulationEU GDPR Fully GDPR compliant

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build an email-unsubscribe web service using Node.js (Express), PostgreSQL, and a single VPS (DigitalOcean). Scope: OAuth/IMAP connectors for Gmail and generic IMAP, mailbox scanning for List-Unsubscribe headers and unsubscribe links, follow unsubscribe URLs or send unsubscribe requests, store subscriptions and user settings in Postgres, UI to list subscriptions with multi-select unsubscribe button, scheduled rollup digest sender, basic screener/blocklist and priority-sender rules, authentication and account management, logging, error handling, and unit/integration tests. Out of scope: enterprise SSO, paid billing integration, audit certification, and mobile apps. Include retries, idempotency for unsubscribe requests, rate-limit handling, monitoring alerts, and automated tests for core flows.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Hard moats found in the evidence-3
  • Evidence score83

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
