Languagetools

A capable technical user can build a functional replacement (listings, search, admin, Stripe payments) but reproducing the directory's SEO, editorial traffic, and brand value would be difficult; the project is multi-week so a full one-person rebuild is plausible for a narrow workflow but not an identical replacement.

No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.

No published price to break even against.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Accept tool submissions, publish approved tools to language/tag-filtered listings, provide search and pagination, and accept one-time paid submissions.

What it still won’t have

  • Existing editorial traffic and SEO that the hosted directory already has
  • Brand recognition, social media promotion and featured placements
  • Curation quality and community trust built over time

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a self-hosted language-tools directory using Next.js (React) for the frontend, Node.js + Express and Postgres for the backend, and Stripe for one-time payments. Core features: language and tag-driven listings, full-text search, paginated results, submission form with file/link fields, admin approval UI (publish, feature, add badge), payment flow for immediate publish vs waiting list, and scheduled job to regenerate a static listing cache. Out of scope: federated user accounts, paid recurring subscriptions, analytics dashboards, and editorial content generation. Include input validation, error handling, authentication for admin, basic unit/integration tests, and deployment scripts for Vercel (frontend) and a small VPS or Heroku-like host (backend).

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Evidence score53

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
