Invoice Ninja

A single developer can build a useful, self-hosted invoicing workflow (invoices, PDF, Stripe payments, email) in about a week, but matching Invoice Ninja's full feature set (bank sync, e-invoicing/PEPPOL, native apps, integrations catalogue, enterprise features) is larger and not practical to fully replicate.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

Code Invoice Ninja publishes itself

Not a way out of the subscription — these are the vendor’s own repositories. Worth a look for how they build, and for anything you would have to integrate with.

What a replacement has to do

  • Create and send invoices, accept online payments, record payments and view invoice status

What it still won’t have

  • Bank account sync (Yodlee / GoCardless)
  • e-Invoicing / PEPPOL network access
  • Branded client portals and hosted subdomains
  • Mobile & desktop native apps
  • Built-in integrations catalogue (Zapier/Make) and many prebuilt connectors

What remains hard

  • Brand trustTrusted by 200,000+ businesses · Free forever · No credit card

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted invoicing app using Django + React + Postgres. In scope: user account, client CRUD, product/service library, invoice CRUD with real-time HTML preview and PDF generation, email invoices via SMTP, Stripe checkout link integration and webhook handlers to record payments, simple dashboard showing outstanding/paid invoices, and a REST API for invoices. Out of scope: bank sync (Yodlee), PEPPOL/e-invoicing, native mobile apps, extensive marketplace integrations, and multi-tenant enterprise user permissions. Include input validation, error handling, webhook signature verification, unit tests for core business logic, and basic end-to-end tests for invoice creation and payment flow. Provide Docker Compose for local dev and a systemd-deployable production setup with instructions for TLS, database migrations, and backups.

  • Evidence score67

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
