Learning and careers decision

InstaGroups

A technical user can build a useful, self-hosted team generator and tournament manager, but reproducing the full paid product (mobile apps, polished collaboration, scale-tested UX and support) is a larger effort and better served by continuing to pay.

No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Import a class roster, assign attributes (gender, ability, custom), run a balancing algorithm to produce teams, optionally create tournament brackets and record scores.

What it still won’t have

  • Polished native iOS app and App Store distribution
  • Refined UX polish and accessibility work
  • Built-in analytics/dashboard polish and visualizations
  • Customer support, onboarding flows, and billing/subscription management
  • Scale-tested collaborative workspaces with real-time sync and conflict resolution

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-tenant web app (Node.js + Express, Postgres, React) that replicates InstaGroups' core flow: allow CSV/manual roster import, store students with attributes, implement a configurable balancing algorithm (gender, ability, custom weights) that outputs teams, generate round-robin and knockout brackets, record scores and compute standings, and expose a simple sharing/invite link for a workspace. Out of scope: native iOS app, payment/billing, advanced analytics visualizations, real-time conflict resolution. Include input validation, error handling, unit tests for the balancing and bracket algorithms, and deployment scripts for a small cloud instance (e.g., DigitalOcean or AWS t3.small).

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • Evidence score52

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
