IndieMerger
A small technical user can build a useful matchmaking MVP (browsing, matching, contact) in about a week, but reproducing the full paid product (featured placement, premium support, polished AI explanations and verification scale) needs more ops and polish.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All IndieMerger alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Users create a profile, the system scores/matches profiles by skills/goals, users search/browse matches, and users contact matches (via an outbound email or in-app message).
What it still won’t have
- Featured profile, priority placement and “who viewed your profile” analytics
- Unlimited in-app real-time messaging and file-sharing workspace
- Bundled premium support and commercial guarantees
- Manual profile verification workflow and moderation at scale
- Polish of the vendor’s AI match explanations and UI/UX refinements
What remains hard
- Brand trust
100% Verified All profiles are manually verified

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a lightweight IndieMerger clone as a one-week MVP using: Next.js (React) for frontend, Node.js + Express for backend, Postgres for storage, and Vercel or a single 1vCPU VPS for hosting. Core features in scope: user signup/login (email+password, magic link optional), profile create/edit with structured skills/goals/availability fields, a match-scoring endpoint that ranks other profiles by cosine similarity over skill vectors (use local embeddings or simple TF-IDF), search and multi-field filters, a contact flow that sends a templated transactional email (SendGrid/Postmark) and stores message records, an admin toggle for manual verification. Out of scope: paid subscription billing UI, featured/priority placement, real-time chat, payments, and advanced AI explanations. Include input validation, authentication checks, sensible error handling, unit tests for matching and auth, and a README describing deployment and environment variables.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score67
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
